(Black) Lives Matter in India too

In the midst of a pandemic, something happened in United States. The land of the free proved once again that it is not free from classism and racial discrimination. And yet again some innocent had to sacrifice their life to prove this to the world.

In case you are living under a rock and aren't familiar with the situation, let me brief it up as something so cruel that even humanity is regretting on having such humans. George floyd, a black american  was choked to death by a cop who knelt on his neck for around 9 minutes. His fault? He was arrested for using a counterfeit $20 note.

But now you may be wondering, what does something that happened miles away from the country where we live have to do with us? We don't even have that contrasting white and black skin color here. We can all be summed up into a single color of brown. Some lighter brown and some a little dark one, but all just brown. Right?
No, certainly not just brown, a lighter and a darker one. And this difference is nothing less than the contrasting white and black of the West. Apparently, if you fall towards the lighter spectrum, you'll be liked by all from the very beginning and given more opportunities. As a result, you'll get more confident, charming and with a good personality. You'll have a record breaking career and an even better personal life. And when you die, people will cry at your funeral, they'll remember you as a good one. However, if by any chance, god forbid, you fall towards the darker spectrum, you'll spend your life using fair skin creams and home remedies for lighter skin. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now don't deny it, we've all done it, at least at some point in our lives. Judging a book by it's cover and judging a person by their skin tone is in our blood. Even though we don't like it when our society aunty or relatives do this to us, we do judge random people here and there based on their appearances.
And oh what a craze we have for Korean dramas and k-pop music like BTS and Blackpink just because of their appearances even though we don't get a single word they say. Appearances. And don't even get me started with appearances. This face mask and no makeup makeups are trending only because of their doll like appearances. We all secretly want to achieve that flawlessly bright skin and pink undertone even though we show the world how non prejudicial we are and how we don't judge a person by their looks. As a result we have two parallel personalities, one which strives to match that beauty standard and the other which is fair and equal to each and everyone. And more often than not, the former takes a toll over the latter and makes us double standard hypocrites. Sad to break this news to you, but we both are, somewhere deep inside, a double standard hypocrite.

It's heartbreaking to realize that out of all the things happening in this chaotic 21st century, what bothers us the most is not global warming, not world peace and neither is it the current pandemic. It's whether to use curd or flour to make our skin brighter. But what if wheatish is the underlying skin tone you have? You certainly cannot change your skin color for forever even if you use bleach or plastic surgery. Does that mean your life is a waste and all you get to do in this life is to test various fairness creams and home remedies and live a life full if failure? Isn't it much easier to accept what you have been given and appreciate it just as it is? Most of us have two perfectly fine pair of hands and legs and all other sense organs. Isn't it enough to be grateful to your fate and to make the best use of this life that you've been given?
